Experiencing the auto insurance world firsthand

I got in a fender bender last week on the way to work. I’d bought my new (used) car only three months ago, and unfortunately my streak of wrecking every car I’ve ever owned remains intact.

640px-Mater_cars_Cars_2This is the first claim my wife and I have filed with our longtime insurance carrier, State Farm. So far, so good. My agent in Marietta, Harry Smith, set us up to file over the phone right after the accident and that went quickly.

I learned that if you use a State Farm-affiliated body shop, you don’t need to go around getting estimates; State Farm handles the underwriting at the one you choose.

The company arranged for a rental car as well. I needed to make maybe three phone calls and days later the car is in the shop and things seem to be progressing smoothly. Stay tuned!

Meantime, I’d love to hear about your experience filing an auto claim. Comment away…

One of my insurance carries - Selective Insurance - also offers, what they call their Collision Care Program which is a network of preferred collision repair shops and they will guarantee the repairs as long as you own the vehicle. I always try and send my clients to one of these shops because a separate adjuster will not have to write a separate estimate which saves time and effort on my part. It's great to know that the insurance company will stand by the work of the body shop just in case there are any issues now or down the road.

The three times I have been hit by others the settlement was complicated because the person hitting me did not notify their insurance agent!
